West Mancos & Box Canyon Loop
It all begins with an idea.
This loop is an unfrequented La Plata mtb gem and a true adventure ride. A 10-mile gravel road climb brings you to the Sharkstooth trailhead. The West Mancos trail starts with rugged, loamy, forested singletrack. It continues with just about every type of terrain you could imagine encountering, including stream crossings, wide-open pastures, and fast descents, and ends with techy switchbacks. Then the Box Canyon trail provides epic meadows, fast singletrack, and a couple of grunty climbs. Finish by riding a couple of miles of pavement back to your car. This route can be shuttled, but beware of the last mile or two to Sharkstooth trailhead. The beginning of West Mancos can stay pretty snowy through the beginning of summer.

The Rail Runner Weekend is an adaptation of Cass Gilbert's prolific New Mexico Off-Road Runner Route, a giant cross-state 500-mile ride that generally takes folks nine days to complete. Not many of us have nine days to set off on our bikes, which is why we choose to shorten this route to a 3-day itinerary ending in Belen, which just happens to be the last stop on the Sante Fe Rail Runner train. This route offers exceptional opportunities for brief hikes to explore ancient Puebloan dwellings and rock art. Water sources are scarce, so we advise bringing or stashing your supply.
